    Junior All England Championships 2023

Ulster's Matthew Cheung and Paige Woods travelled to Birmingham to compete in the first Junior All England Championships. It was a fantastic event ran by Badminton England & great to have a Junior international Series event within the UK.

Matthew Cheung was seeded 7th for the Boys singles and after a bye in the first round he had a solid 2nd round win over Jewel Mano Varughese from Wales. In the 3rd round he faced American Jeffery Chang. After a poor opening set, losing 21-8, Matthew turned it around in the 2nd & 3rd Game winning 22-20, 21-17. Andrei Schmidt , the, the 15th seed, from Estonia was his next opponent in Round 4 and it proved a tough test but Matthew came through in 3 set again, 21-15, 12-21, 21-16. This set up a quarter Final  against the 11th Seed, Michael Pang from England. It was very tight throughout the match but it was the English player who came through 21-17, 21-19.

Matthew teamed up with Dylan Noble for the boys Doubles and after an impressive first round win against England, faced the top seeds of the Event from Estonia. It turned out to be a great Last 16 match with the Estonian pair winning the first 21-18. The Ireland pair then hit back and won the 2nd set 21-18 to force a deciding Game. It was close in the 3rd and the Estonian pair took the critical points to win 21-19.

Paige Woods played all 3 events & put in some great performances, particularly the mixed Doubles . Playing with Dylan Noble they had a great 3 set match in the Round of 32 against England/Indian Pair. After sharing the first 2 games the deciding set was good quality but it was the England/Indian pair who won the games 21-16.

In the Girls Singles, Paige faced England's Sia Pandit. The English player was strong throughout and took the match 21-14, 21-13.

A tough draw in the girls Doubles event seen Paige & Michelle Shochan seen the Irish pair face the Top Seeds Chloe Dennis & Leona Lee from England. The rallies were long and competitive but it was the English Pair who progressed with a 21-11, 21-16 win.

It is great to see Ulster & Irish players playing & performing well  in these International Junior Events. Matthew Cheung will be competing in the Junior International  Challenge Bulgarian Junior Open next week. Keep an eye on our Socials to see how he gets on!
