Origins of Badminton

“Although the exact origins of badminton are unclear, there is some evidence of games
based on the use of a shuttlecock and racket being played in Ancient Greece
over 2000 years ago, with similar games then evolving in India and China. The
game was certainly played in England, where it became known as “battledore and
shuttlecock”, with the aim being to keep the shuttlecock in the air for as long
as possible. British military officers stationed in India in the mid-18th
century are believed to have added a net to the game and the game became more
established in England when these officers returned home. The game was launched
in 1873 at Badminton House, Gloucestershire, England, from where it derived its
modern name of “badminton”.”
