    U15 Quadrangular

The U15 Irish team were competing at the home Nations U15 Quadrangular, 26th-29th April at the University of Warwick with 3 Ulster Players, Matthew Cheung, Paige Woods & Chloe Woods, representing the team and coming back home with 5 Medals in both the team event and Individual.

Friday 26th April was a team event between the Nations with 2 boy's Singles, 2 Girls Singles, 2 Boy's doubles, 2 Girls Doubles and 1 mixed making up the matches each tie. First up for Ireland was Team Scotland and it was extremely close but Scotland nicked it 5-4. The match could have gone either way as there were 3 matches going to 3 sets with Scotland coming out on top in 2 of them. Next up for Ireland was Wales and it was a great bounce back from the team to dominate the tie dropping only 2 games winning the tie 7-2.

Last match of the day was against a very strong England team who won their opening 2 matches against Wales and Scotland 9-0 and 8-1 respectfully. Ireland put up a great fight but lost out 7-2 overall but claimed a well deserved Bronze Medal.

Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th comprised of the Individual event. Having went undefeated in the team event Matthew Cheung looked confident to progress to the latter stages of the boys singles and didn't disappoint reaching the final defeating England's Micheal Pang 21-15, 16-21, 21-15 in the Semi Final. He faced England's top Boys Singles player Oliver Butler and had a great start winning the 1st set 21-14. Butler came out strong in the 2nd set leading 11-6 at the interval and then lead 20-13. Matthew had a run of 6 great points to bring it to 19-20 but Butler took the deciding point with a great cross court smash to win the set 21-19. In the 3rd set Matthew took an early lead, 6-2, but after some unforced Errors it was Butler who lead at the interval 11-9. It was a similar story to the 2nd set with Butler then opening up a lead at the latter end of the set 20-15. Matthew again played some great points to bring it back to 19-20 but couldn't keep the run going with Butler taking the next point to win the match. Overall a great Singles event and a Silver Medal to Matthew.

Chloe and Paige Woods won an impressive bronze Medal in the Girls doubles after 2 great wins to progress to the Semi Final. They faced Maisie Kite and Katie Reilly in the first round and after losing a close first set, 21-18, played well in the 2nd &  3rd set to win 21-17, 21-15. In the Quarter finals they faced the Welsh pair Aravind/Moriss which was another 3 set thriller! Paige & Chloe lost an extremely close 1st set 25-27 but quickly got back on track in the second set taking it 21-13. The Ulster pair maintained their good play in the 3rd set and took it 21-18 and into the Semi Finals. There they were up against the very strong English pair of Atkins/Lee, losing out 21-6, 21-6, but a great Bronze medal in their first evet Quadrangular.

The Flynn sisters also played well to reach the Semi Final of the Girls Doubles but lost out to Hong/Parab.

Matthew Cheung teamed up with Dylan Noble for the Boy's Doubles. The Irish pair came through a tough opening round match against Scotland pair Harper/Robertson in 3 sets, to play another Scottish pair of McGuire/Sarvesvaran in the Quarter Final. The Scottish pair played a great opening set and took it 21-23. Matthew and Dylan really stepped it up in the 2nd set winning 21-12, maintaining their level in the 3rd set to win and progress to the final 21-15 in the 3rd. In the final they played Butler/Hosken from England, but the English pair proved to strong winning 21-10, 21-6. Another great performance and great achievement to take a silver Medal.

Siofra Flynn had an excellent win the girls Singles Quarter finals 19-21, 21-18, 21-19 over Lucy Atkins to reach the Semi finals but lost out to England's Leona Lee 21-18, 21-10.

Overall a very positive performance from the Irish Team coming away with 2 silvers and 2 Bronzes in the Individual Event and a Bronze in the Team Event. Well done to all players and Coaches!
