Ulster Badminton Juvenile Clubs and Pan Disabilities Club

This programme was set up by Ulster Badminton in 2007 with the aim of introducing more children to badminton at an early age, giving them the opportunity to play badminton in a fun and relaxed environment. Many clubs have been set up in areas where currently there is a lack of badminton clubs and others work in conjunction with the already established Ulster affiliated clubs. The programme caters for children between the ages of 6 – 17 years old. Each club is run by a Manager and each also has a Club Coach. Both these people are employed by Ulster Badminton and all coaches are qualified through Badminton Ireland. Each member, as well as having fun, receives weekly coaching from these qualified coaches with the aim of improving the individual as well as the standard of badminton across the country.

Ulster Schools' Badminton Association

The Association's aim is to foster and develop this great family and competitive game.

It exists to encourage young people in schools to play badminton.

                                                                                Report 2009-10

Another season completed and as usual it was very busy. This year we had 25 Secondary schools and 4 Primary schools involved in our various competitions. They were all keenly contested and in the spirit of the great game we play.

After eight years in the job Mrs Denise McNeill stepped down as our Match Secretary. I would like to pay a warm tribute to Denise for all the hard work she put in over the years. As we all know much of the work goes unnoticed but those of us close to her know how willingly she gave of her time and appreciate all she did for Schools Badminton. We hope she will continue on the committee and the organisation of Belfast High School Badminton.

We were very fortunate in that Mrs Gail McNabb, a Physical Education Teacher at Hunterhouse, was prepared to step into the role. She has already shown her capabilities and the Champion of Champions and the Ulster Schools Finals were very efficiently run. A real tribute to what Gail has already brought to this job.

The finals this year were held at the NBC Lisburn on Friday 5 th March. This is a great day for badminton in schools and the excitement is fantastic in the hall. From the youngest primary school pupil to the oldest 18 year –old, all play with a passion and desire to do their best for their team mates and themselves. Once again Friends School Lisburn were the most successful school in both boys and girls and must be congratulated. Other schools including Coleraine High, Wallace High, Bloomfield Collegiate and Sullivan Upper performed well in the girls competitions. While in the boys Bangor Grammar, Coleraine A.I., Banbridge High and Ballyclare High also deserve praise.

The All-Ireland Finals were once again held at Gormanstown on Wednesday 24th March. Ulster teams represented their province very well and we won four Division 1 titles. Friends were again in prominence winning girls and boys competitions.

Many of you will know Mervyn Fee. He has been the President of the Ulster Schools’ for more years than I can remember. He has always given of his time and talents freely to further the interests of young people in badminton. He has given equipment and shuttles to the association to be used in our competitions. He is standing down this year and on behalf of his many friends in badminton, I want to place on record our sincere thanks for his massive contribution to badminton in schools. I know he will maintain an interest in our association in the future. Jim Flanagan has kindly agreed to take over as president. He was one of the men behind the many successes of Coleraine A.I. and I look forward to working with Jim to further badminton in schools.

I will end by thanking all those members of staff who have given of their time to run badminton club, organise and take their players to matches. Without your massive commitment, badminton in Ulster would not be as strong as it is! Well done and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Raymond McNeill (Chairman)
