General

Our coaching structure is closely linked into the BUI's programme which is supported by Coaching Ireland.

Coaching courses are available for (a) Tutors, (b) Level 3, (c) Level 2, (d) Level 1, (e) Instructor and (f) Beginner - level 0. These courses are held in various locations and run by qualified Tutors. They are run on a 'demand' basis. Anyone interested in taking a coaching award, click here, indicate your interest and contact details to be kept informed.

Details of courses will also be advertised on this and Badminton Ireland websites.

Coaches please note. If you qualified before 2005, it is now time to take a refresher course, for insurances purposes, to remain on the current Badminton Ireland coaches list.

Clubs please note. It is up to each individual club using a coach to make sure the coach is on the current Badminton Ireland coaches list and registered as per Badminton Ireland Code of Conduct for Children's Sport.

The Instructors Award has been introduced for those working within their clubs who wish to enhance their coaching skills. It can be treated as a stand alone course or as a stepping stone for those who wish to go on to the Level 1 Course but do not have the playing experience necessary. The Branch would actively encourage clubs to consider getting at least one of their members to take this qualification as a means of raising the skills of their members.

Ulster Squads

The squads are operational and run from 6.00pm to 8.00pm in the National Badminton Centre.     8 courts are used for the U15 & U17 Squads who meet on Wednesday nights.   The U13 Squad meets on Thursday nights and uses 8 courts.            The U13 squad runs with three coaches in attendance and the other 2 squads run with 2 coaches for each session.

Tom Causer, our High Performance Coach is responsible for putting together the programme that all squads will work to and you will be expected to follow that programme. Appropriate recording of attendance and monitoring will be required to be filled in the appropriate forms. This is essential to allow for player monitoring aiding their development.

Regional Development Squads

Ulster Badminton has 10 Regional Development Squads operating throughout Ulster. Regional Development Squads have been set up to act as a link between School Sport and Ulster representation. Players must be U15 and must be nominated by their school to receive a trial for their local squad and from there the top players in each area will be selected.

Squads meet on a weekly basis during term time and receive coaching from experienced Badminton Ireland qualified coaches. The squads work towards the Sport Northern Ireland Youth Games competition that takes place each May. Here all the squads come together at the National Badminton Centre in Lisburn and compete against each other for the title of Sport NI Youth Games Champions. Currently the holders of the title are Donegal after they defeated South East Ards in the 2008 Final.

Squads take place in the following areas, Antrim, Banbridge, Belfast, Coleraine, Donegal, Down District, Lisburn, Londonderry, Newtownards and Omagh.
