The U13, U17 & Master Irish National Championships took place at Lisburn Racquets Centre on 17th&18th February, which proved an action packed 2 days with 196 participants playing a total of 296 matches over all the 3 events.
Paige Woods (Alpha BC) came away from the U13 event with a Gold and a silver in the Ladies Doubles partnering Siofra Flynn and in the Girls Singles. Roisin McKenna (Alpha) also had a good tournament reaching the semi final of the Girls singles & Girls Doubles. she partnered Rory Comer (Ballyclare) in the Mixed Doubles to reach the finals but unfortunately lost out to hatrick winners Eoghan Cooney & Siofra Flynn. Rory teamed up with Karl McLoughlin for the Boys doubles where he reached the final but again just lost out to Eoghan Cooney & partner Jack Hickey. Eoghan Cooney again proved to be in the way for Rory in the Semi finals of the boys singles losing out in 2 sets.
Fresh of his 3 U15 Irish National titles 12 Year Old Matthew Cheung continued his good form in the U17 event reaching the final of the boys singles beating the No.1 seed en route. He was up against Daniel O’Meara in the final with Daniel taking a very tight 1st set 22-20 and proved too strong in the 2nd set taking it 21-8. However, a great run for Matthew play up an age group. He partnered Vincent Pontanosa in the boys doubles reaching the semi finals but lost out to top seeds Daniel O’Meara & Sean Patrick Laureta.
Alpha’s Jack Livingstone partnered Megan McLoughlin and the 3/4 seeds reached the semi finals of the mixed doubles losing out in 3 sets.
The Masters Irish Nationals had a total of 112 participants playing across 8 different age groups. There were a number of Ulster winners across all the age groups with one of the highlights being Ulster Badminton Treasurer & Council member Tony Clarke winning the Over 70’s Men’s Singles & Men’s Doubles.
