Toyko 2020 Badminton Paralympic Events confirmed!

On 31st January 2017 it was announced that badminton was one of the 6 new sports that would be included in the 2020 Paralympics, adding to the 16 sports from the previous games in Rio.Paralympic 2020 logo

Yesterday the International Paralympic Committee was announced there will be 14 badminton events featuring…..

Men’s events: Singles WH1, Singles WH2, Singles SL3, Singles SL4, Singles SU5, Singles SS6, Doubles WH.

Women’s events:  Singles WH1, Singles WH2, Singles SL4, Singles SU5, Doubles WH, Doubles SL/SU.

Mixed events: Doubles SL/SU.

There will be 90 slots for athletes taking part in badminton (44 male, 46 female).

Niall Europeans 2014SS6 Double World & European Champion Niall McVeigh was understandable delighted that his classification was included in the final 14 events. ‘Im absolutely over the moon. It has been a dream of mine since starting playing badminton to compete in a Paralympics’

Niall, who is currently in Japan competing added ‘It is fantastic for the sport and a massive boast for Para Badminton as a whole and it’s a great reward for all the hard work of the players, coaches, officials and organisers of Para badminton events. It is only going to help promote the sport further within increased exposure at the Games’
